The composition comprises (a) a hydroxyalkyl-phosphine or -phosphonium compound, (b) an anionic, aromatic syntan, (c) water and, optionally, (d) an acid. Compound (a) may particularly be a tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium salt and the syntan (b) may be the condensation product of a sulphonated aromatic compound, optionally plus unsulphonated aromatic, with formaldehyde and/or urea. The acid (d) may particularly be acetic or formic acid. Use of the composition gives tanned or pre-tanned leather having good whiteness and a high shrinkage temperature. |
