A titanium material contains more than 0.05 wt.% of one or more precipitation hardening elements (preferably Fe, Cu and/or Si) and more than 0.05 (preferably 0.20-0.35) wt.% interstitially dissolved oxygen, has a fine grained structure of grain size finer than 5, preferably finer than 8 (ASTM Standard E 112-88), and has been subjected to hot working, optional recrystallisation annealing, cold working and precipitation hardening. Also claimed is a titanium material production process involving (a) alloying with one or more precipitation hardening elements and oxygen if not already present in sufficient amounts in the sponge titanium or any alloying components, the oxygen dissolving interstitially; (b) hot working and optionally recrystallisation annealing to obtain a fine grained structure; (c) cold working with optional intermediate annealing; and (d) tempering to precipitate the precipitation hardening elements. |
