PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new microorganism, belonging to the Bacillus circulans species, capable of producing a maleate isomerase and isomerizing maleic acid and producing fumaric acid by adding the microbial cell or an enzyme thereof to an aqueous solution containing maleic acid. SOLUTION: This new microorganism is Bacillus circulans MI-113 (FERM P-15645), belonging to the Bacillus circulans species and having the ability to produce a maleate isomerase and can be utilized for producing fumaric acid by adding a microbial cell of the microorganism or a maleate isomerase fraction prepared from the microorganism to an aqueous solution containing maleic acid, isomerizing the maleic acid and producing the fumaric acid. The new microorganism is obtained by culturing a soil sample collected from the natural world in a culture medium containing the maleic acid as a carbon source, coating a plate culture medium containing agar with a cultured product and selecting the microorganism having maleate isomerase activities from the grown colony. |
