摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device which provides a black and white display and is suitable for a color display, by setting the value of the anisotropic body so that the visual sensitivity compensated value of the optical intensity of the light beams passed through the device is made approximately minimum based on the product of the twist angle and the double refractive index of the liquid crystal and the layer thickness of the liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: This device is formed by arranging a liquid crystal cell 12, which is made by holding a liquid crystal 17 that is twist oriented for more than 120 degrees and held between a pair of opposing substrates 13 and 13 and a single layer optical anisotropic body 19 between a pair of polarizing plates 11 and 18. Then, the value of the body 19 is set so that the visual sensitivity compensated value of the optical intensity of the light beams passed through the device is made approximately minimum based on the product (Δn.d) where Δn is the twist angle of the liquid crystal 17 held by the cell 12 and the double refractive index of the liquid crystal 17 and (d) is the layer thickness of the liquid crystal layer. Thus, a perfect black and white display is obtained, the light quantity in a passing state is increased, the display is made brighter and the contrast ratio is greatly improved.
