PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a group of articles which move in a carrying-out flow in an upright condition and bring the top end of the subsequent articles into abutment with its rear end positively. SOLUTION: This article retainer 30 is provided with a slender lane 36 which defines an axial line in a longitudinal direction for making a limited number of series of articles which define a group 42 of articles join a roughly continuous series of articles which define a carrying-out flow 46, an air feeder 24, an air chamber which is connected with the air feeder 24, and a plurality of holes in the air chamber 26. The air feeder 24 forms an air flow toward the air chamber 26, and the air flow generates an air flow with its polarity to which the articles of the rear end 60 of the article group 42 go. The air flow 66 with its polarity maintains at least one of articles which define the rear end 60 of the group 42 of articles in such a direction as it is brought into contact with the group 42 of articles when the group 42 of articles moves on a conveyor along the slender lane 36.
