PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain good contact characteristic with a magnetic head and improved error rate by controlling the coupling amount and the Young's modulus and thickness is the medium width direction which are determined depending on a nonmagnetic supporting body. SOLUTION: Following relation is established among a coupling amount C, Young's modulus Y in the width direction of a magnetic recording medium (medium), and thickness T of medium. -0.2<=C<=+0.2... (1) 0.35<=x<=±5 (X-0.575)C<=1.05... (2) Where, X indicates stiffness strength in he tape width direction and can be calculated by the following relation. X:(Young's modulus Y kg in the medium width direction/mm<2> )×(medium thickness Tμm)<3>×10<5> As explained above, since the relationship among the coupling amount, Young's modulus in the medium width direction and thickness is maintained, good error rate can be obtained and a medium can also be used as a magnetic recording medium for non-tracking system. Moreover, a figure shows a relationship between stiffness strength X in the tape width direction and error rate.
