The system comprises a number of measurement stations situated throughout a given geographical region measuring a specific physical, chemical or biological parameter. Information collected by these stations is transmitted to a central location where a data processing system receives both the data values and time of data collection. The data processing system is also provided with the spatial co-ordinates of the measurement stations. The data processing system uses interpolation of the results derived from the discrete stations to determine intermediate values and thus create a cartographic image of the measured value. The image may be displayed in false colours or in three dimensions to make a clear display of the information.
