PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an unpleasant squeak of gears by suppressing the relative rotation of a mesh brake at its meshing employed for its no drag to improve the transmission efficiency of an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: An automatic transmission T has in its change gear mechanism M a rotary element R3 for effecting the reverse gear stage, a reverse brake B-R for locking the rotary element R3 and a separate friction engaging element B-3 capable of stopping the rotation of the rotary element R3. The reverse brake is of a mesh type causing no drag which locks the rotary element R3 by meshing therewith. When the reverse gear stage is selected, the friction engaging element B-3 is controlled to engage and then stop the rotary element R3 until the brake B-R completely mashes with the rotary element R3, to prevent the squeak of gears at their meshing. |
