PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high output, reduce noise and balance the output between channels as a tape for a helical scan-type VTR, by forming fine streaks on a non-magnetic supporting body. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording tape of a metallic magnetic thin film type is constituted of an undercoat layer 21, a magnetic layer 22, a protecting layer 23 and an applied lubricant layered on a non-magnetic supporting body 2. Slim streaks (texture) 20 are formed in the undercoat layer 21. Because of the texture formed in the non-magnetic supporting body 2, an orientation characteristic of the magnetic layer is improved, and the coercive force and squareness ratio of the recording tape are improved, outputs are improved, noises are reduced, and an error rate is improved. Moreover, when the texture is formed to nearly agree with scanning of a head, that is, within±30 deg. to a scan direction, the error rate and outputs between channels are improved.
