PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the raw material cost by making thin a magnetic layer thinner and at the same time, provide a magnetic recording medium with a high electromagnetic conversion characteristic. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium l has a non-magnetic support 2, a ground layer 3 that is formed on one main surface of the non-magnetic support 2, contains carbon black and a binder, and is at least 0.5μm thick, and a magnetic layer 4 that is formed on the ground layer 3 and is 1.0μm thick or less. In the ground layer 3, the average particle diameter of the above carbon black is set to 30nm or less and at the same time the added amount of the above carbon black is set to 0.5-3.0 when the amount of the above binder is 1.0.
