PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium that can be applied to a highdensity digital recording system with improved short-wavelength output and C/N and excellent overwrite characteristics. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium with a magnetic layer where a ferromagnetic metal particle 1 is dispersed into a binder on a flexible support, the average long-axis length of the ferromagnetic metal particle 1 ranges from 0.05 to 0.12μm, and the average long-axis length of the crystallite of the particle with two crystals and three crystals of a crystallite 2 for constituting the above ferromagnetic metal particle is 0.7 to 1.0 times the average long-axis length of a particle with one particle. A lower layer where non-magnetic inorganic powder is dispersed to the binder is provided between the flexible support and the magnetic layer and the dry thickness of the magnetic layer ranges from 0.05 to 1.0μm.
