Monitoring device for position of vehicle driving controls for determining deterioration of driver performance

The appliance has a driving control position detector for the brakes, accelerator and gears. This arrangement detects the behaviour of the vehicle, and/or manner in which the driver is operating, and/or at least the driver's performance, in order to obtain information which indicates the performance of the driver. On the basis of this data a first monitor establishes whether the driver's performance is abnormal. A second monitor establishes a measure of the driver's normal driving performance, from a large input of individual data of the position of the individual controls into a neural network, when the drivers performance has not been established by the first detector as abnormal. Depending on the degree of normality of the driver's performance, determined by the two detectors, a control system provides a warning or assumes control of the vehicle.
