A communication protocol for use in a mobile cellular communication system (101) using time division duplex establishes a communication channel between a user station (102) and a base station (104) in a time slot (602) by assigning a first time segment (610) within the time slot for a user station transmission and assigning a second time segment (625) within the time slot (602) for a base station transmission. The protocol also provides for virtual time slots wherein a time segment assigned for periodic transmission from the base station (104) to a given user station (102) may be non-contiguous with respect to the time segment assigned for periodic transmissions from the user station (102) to the base station (104).
