The method governs the performance of an electric saw by controlling the blade drive motor torque, by comparing the current with a reference value and correcting changes to the actual value, and by advancing the saw blade or the work according to a predetermined rate. An electrically driven saw blade (4) operates in relation to a workpiece bed (1) in accordance with input signals (12,13) and feedback information (5) providing data (15) for the motor torque control unit (2), and (16) for the bed advancing control (3). Reference values (8,10) may be preset for optimum cutting performance.
