A cartoon feed opening wheel assembly apparatus (5) for opening carton blanks (22) into preformed cartons on a packaging machine (7) is disclosed. The apparatus (5) has a pair of spaced and generally parallel endless vacuum conveyor belts (24) moving along a path of travel from a magazine assembly (15) to a transport conveyor (17), and a carton opening wheel (30) positioned on the packaging machine (7) with respect to the vacuum conveyor belts (24) for engaging the top portion of an unopened carton blank (22) being moved on the vacuum conveyor belts (24) toward the transport covveyor (17). The carton opening wheel (30) has at least one suction cup (39) supported thereon for engaging the top portion of the carton blank (22) at a speed and direction substantially the same as the speed and direction of the unopened carton blank (22) moving on the vacuum conveyor belts (24). Thereafter, the speed of the suction cup (39) is retarded with respect to the speed of the carton blank (22). |
