Prosthetic ball-and-socket joint

The prosthesis is for a human hip joint. The ball part (1) of the joint has a shaft or tang (2) which fits into the marrow cavity or an artificial bore (5) at the end of the femur (3). The tang may have a square-cut end and may be slightly tapered. The ball fits into a socket (4) which is firmly anchored in the bony structure of the pelvis.
