RELEASE COATED LINERS AND SECURITY LABELS CONTAINING SUCH RELEASE COATED LINERS

A release coated liner (36) and security labels (30) containing such release coated liners (36) are described. In one embodiment the labels (30) comprise (A) a sheet (31) having an upper and a lower surface; (B) an adhesive layer (32) having an upper surface and a lower surface and having its upper surface in contact with the lower surface of the sheet (31); and (C) a liner (35) with a release coating (33) removably affixed to the lower surface of the adhesive layer (B) (32) wherein the release coating (33) contains a microencapsulated material which is capable of marking a substrate when (a) at least some of the capsules (34) are broken, (b) the liner (35) with release coating (33) is removed from the label (30), and (c) the label (30), without the liner (35) and release coating (33) is applied to a substrate. The sheet (A) (31) may be a multilayer sheet. In preferred embodiments, the microencapsulated material is an etchant or a fluorescent agent. The security labels (30) may be applied to glass or metal and is preferably applied to painted glass or metal. When graphics or other printing are applied to the security labels (30) by an impact-type printer, the capsules (34) in the release coating (33) are broken in the area of impact, and when the liner (35) with release coating (33) is subsequently removed from the label (30) and the label (30) is applied to a substrate, the material which has been released from the broken capsules (34) will leave an imprint on the substrate.
