System for measuring torque transmitted by rotating shaft

The torque measuring system has a flanged rotor unit (1) in which a strain gauge bridge (9) determines an electrical equivalent signal to the mechanical torsion experienced by the shaft. The resulting signal is amplified and transferred by a bi-directional telemetry modem (7), and a contactless pick-up (21), to a stator unit which houses the signal evaluation unit (22). The modem pair (7,29) also operates in the reverse direction to provide the remote high resolution adjustment of the amplifier gain, and the system zero. Such revised settings are stored in the EEPROM unit (4) as semi-permanent references for potential component replacements, and a shaft speed sensor enables the transmitted power to be evaluated.
