The device comprises a unit which in case of fire generates heat causing a volume-expanding mass (16) to expand and block the pipe. The volume-expanding mass is a product which expands at temperatures of e.g. (300) to (600) degrees. The unit may be activated by at least one sensor (17) of predetermined sensitivity. The effective range of the unit, in the case of fire, extends over the volume-expanding mass. The sensor may be sensitive to smoke, gas, temperature or humidity, and is placed at a distance from the mass. The sensor may be connected to the unit, optically, acoustically or by electrical voltage signal.
