A habitat (10) for rodents (12) and a method for making same are disclosed. The habitat (10) comprises a housing (36) formed of coconut shell (18). The coconut shell (18) defines an inner cavity (20) therein. The coconut shell (18) is comprised of a material resistant to gnawing damage by the rodents (12) and has thermal retention characteristics to allow the rodent (12) to burrow within the cavity (20) in approximate adjacency with an inner curved surface (38) of the coconut shell (18) with body heat of the rodent (12) being radiated and relatively retained by the coconut shell (18) to heat a portion of the coconut shell (18) to assist in maintaining the relative warmth of the rodent (12). The housing (36) has an opening (22) defining an entrance to the cavity (20) with the opening (22) being sized and adapted to accommodate the rodent (12) therethrough.
