The invention relates to a method of producing a shaped filamentary structure, particularly a circular or annular structure. The invention is particularly applicable to filamentary structure which can be subjected to further processing to produce a carbon-carbon product. A specific use of the invention is in the production of discs for use in aircraft braking systems. The invention includes assembling filamentary layers one on top of another and then needle punching the assembly of layers, without needing completely through the assembly. However, there is a relative rotary motion about an axis perpendicular to the faces of the filamentary layers between the assembly of layers and the needling head, so that an annulus of the assembled layers is needled together. In the preferred method of carrying out the invention, the layers of filamentary material are supported by a substructure, which permits needle penetration but which can be subsequently detached from the needled assembly of layers. Also in the preferred method, the layers are themselves of annular shape, and are located in an annular mould. <IMAGE> |
