In a continuously variable transmission having a belt type continuously variable transmission unit where the direction of transmitting torque thereof is switched by torque circulation on the basis of the Low mode and the High mode and the axial forces of both pulleys are changed by switching the Low mode and High mode. In the Low mode of the D range, a comparatively high hydraulic pressure from the regulator valve 56 is supplied to the Low clutch hydraulic servo CL via the ports o and p of the Low-High shifting valve 60' and to the secondary hydraulic servo 33 via the ports s, r. In addition, a comparatively low hydraulic pressure from the ratio control valve 57 is supplied to the primary hydraulic servo 32 via the ports g, t. The supplies of oil pressures is reversed by switching the Low-High shifting valve 60'.
