Communications terminal and control method therefor

A communications terminal (10) comprises communications control means (80) for notifying a host (30) whether or not the terminal is in a condition to receive and process data. The communications control means can be selectively set in a first mode or a second mode. In the first mode a busy signal is output due to an error cause (62a), a standby cause (62b), or a buffer full cause (59a) to inform the host that data processing by the communications terminal is not possible. In the second mode a busy signal is not output due to error cause (62a) or standby cause (62b) so that commands for handling the causes can be received from the host. When the terminal (10) is used with an application program (5) compatible with real-time commands, the second mode is selected so that the application program (5) can contribute to solving the problem of the communications terminal (10) when an error occurs or the terminal is off-line.
