Mercury (Hg) is recovered from solid or liquid materials containing one or more oxidizable compounds by passing the material and oxygen (O2) or an O2- containing gas through an indirectly heated zone at a temperature of 400-1100 [deg]C under such conditions that incomplete oxidation occurs. The product stream exiting the heating zone contains a condensible Hg-containing phase and a non- condensible phase with a lower Hg content. These phases are separated and the Hg is virtually completely recovered from the condensible phase.
