PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which can isomerize ethylbenzene to xylenes at high efficiency while suppressing subreactions in the presence of hydrogen by mixing a specified amount of a refractory inorganic oxide such as alumina bearing platinum group metals with a zeolite bearing a specified inorganic substance. SOLUTION: This catalyst which produces xylene at high efficiency by isomerizing ethylbenzene to xylene and lowering the ethylbenzene concentration while suppressing subreactions and suppressing decomposition of xylene comprises 10 pts.wt. of zeolite bearing an inorganic substance at highest ten times as much as zeolite in weight and at least two times as much as zeolite in ion-exchange capacity and adsorption capacity and 1-50 pts.wt. of a refractory inorganic oxide bearing platinum group metals and containing at least one element selected from among boron, beryllium, etc. Platinum, palladium, rhodium, etc., are of the platinum group metals and at least one of alumina, titania, etc., is used as the refractory inorganic oxide. |
