PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel gene of S-adenosylmethionine synthase which codes S-adenosylmethionine sinthase originating from barley and having a specific amino acid sequence and can create plants resistant to alkaline soil by synthesizing a large amount of mugineic acid by expression of the gene in the plant body. SOLUTION: This novel gene of S-adenosylmethionine synthase includes the DNA coding the amino acid sequence substantially represented by the formula. Since S-adenosylmethionine is on the upstream of the biosynthesis path for mugineic acid, namely an iron chelating agent secreted by the true grasses plants in an alkaline soil in which iron deficiency tends to occur. Therefore, when this gene is incorporated into a plant, mugineic acid is biosynthesized to create plants resistant to the alkaline soil. This gene is obtained by preparing cDNA library from mRNA from barley roots and screening the library by the plaque hybridization with a probe comprising a part of gene of S- adenosylmethionine synthase. |
