PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the abrasion of an intake or exhaust spring retainer by setting either one of the contact face of the intake or exhaust spring retainer with an associated intake or exhaust valve spring and the contact face of the intake or exhaust valve spring with the intake or exhaust spring retainer to have an inclination of an angle by which the spring retainer deforms. SOLUTION: An intake or exhaust valve 18 of an engine is urged by an intake or exhaust valve spring 30 in its opened direction, and contacts at its one end with a cylinder head 6 and the other end with an intake or exhaust spring retainer 42. In this arrangement either one of a contact face 50 of the intake or exhaust spring retainer 42 with the intake or exhaust valve spring 30 and a contact face 58 of the intake or exhaust valve spring 30 with the intake or exhaust spring retainer is set to have a tapered face with an angleθby which the intake or exhaust spring retainer 42 deforms, as a result which a local rise in surface pressure is prevented on the contact face 50 on the intake or exhaust spring retainer side and on the contact face 58 for the intake or exhaust spring retainer.
