The drive is for a water pump describing a slow alternating motion of which the rod is reciprocating following a fixed course, a continuous rotary motor drive (4) and joined by a transmission to the rod (1). It consists of a toothed extension (5) and a toothed return (6) joined to the output of the motor (1), a toothed extension rack (7) and a toothed return rack solid with each other. Each toothed drive (5,6) is provided with teeth (51,61) only on part of its periphery equal to or less than a semi-circle and displaced by 180 degrees. Each of the gear teeth cooperate with the associated toothed rack. A damper (12) joins the toothed racks (9,7,8) to the rod of the equipment (1).
