Telephone calls are automatically forwarded from a mobile communications unit to a hard-wired terminal by storing a forwarding telephone number in the mobile communication unit, the forwarding telephone number being the telephone number of the hard-wired terminal. Circuitry in the mobile communications unit detects whether the mobile communications unit has been inserted into a receiving station, and if so, then the forwarding telephone number is retrieved. A call forwarding initiation command that includes the retrieved forwarding telephone number is then generated and sent to a mobile communications network that controls call forwarding operations for the mobile communications unit. In another aspect of the invention a call forwarding cancellation command is generated and sent to the mobile communications network in response to the mobile communications unit being removed from the receiving unit. The generating and sending of the call forwarding initiation command can be made dependent on successful completion of an authentication check between the mobile communications unit and the receiving station. Also, the receiving station may initiate and cancel call forwarding of calls directed to the hard-wired terminal in response to the mobile communications unit being respectively removed from and inserted into the receiving station. |
