The temporary support makes use of a permanent magnet (36) set in the peripheral seal (32) round the lamp to hold the lamp assembly in position through magnetic attraction with the metal walls (16) forming the back of the recess in the vehicle body that accepts the lamp unit. The magnet may extend the full length of the peripheral seal or over only part of its length. Multiple shorter magnets may be used, distributed round the periphery of the lamp unit or placed at particular locations. The magnetic attraction is sufficient to hold the lamp unit in place while the normal fixing operations are performed.
