METHOD FOR EXTRACTING BOTH ENDS OF ROAD BY PROPAGATION OF ACTIVE CONTOUR LINE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which can correct the deviation of propagation processes with no manual operation required when both sides of a road are extracted from a digitized image. SOLUTION: In this method, the 1st (CS1) and 2nd (CS2) initial contour lines which are positioned near both ends of a road to be extracted from a digitized image are inputted. Then the 1st and 2nd initial contour lines are propagated by the 1st and 2nd automatic propagation processes 32 and 33 of active contour lines respectively. Each of both processes 32 and 33 uses an energy model including a term (Ecoupl ) concerning the elastic binding power generated between a pair of points of the 1st and 2nd initial contour lines and also applies the extending direction (Dp ) that is defined as a mean direction between two extending directions which are decided in relation to the 1st and 2nd active contour lines.
