Process for the preparation of 2,2'-(1-methyl 1,2-ethanediylidene)bis[hydrazine carboximidamide] by: a) reacting aminoguanidine hydrochloride with methylglyoxal aldehyde or methylglyoxal dimethyl acetal; and b) purifying the 2,2'-(1-methyl-1,2-ethanediylidene)bis[hydrazine carboximidamide] by crystallization from an acidic aqueous-isopropyl alcohol medium.
