<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the characteristic of a contour image by encoding an outline after selecting an adaptive encoding method according to the size and complexity of the contour. SOLUTION: A control unit 150 logically combines the signals transmitted from the 1st and 2nd comparison units 120 and 140 and transmits a control signal of a low level to a switching unit 400 if all signals received from both units 120 and 140 are identical with logical signals, i.e., have small and complicated contours. If not, i.e., the signals have large and simple contours, a control signal of a high level is sent to the unit 400. As a result, a smaller and more complicated contour image of a video frame is encoded by a chain encoding method via a 1st contour encoding unit 200. On the other hand, a larger and simpler contour image is encoded by a polygonal approximation/DST(discrete sine transform) encoding method via a 2nd contour encoding unit 300.</p> |
