[Class 80 (iii)] Relates to screw-and-nut gearing wherein balls roll in the engaging threads and has for its object to obviate the use of a cage for spacing the balls. The nut 6 has a continuous thread 3, but the screw 1 has a number of separate and distinct closed grooves 2 each of which extends around the entire periphery of the screw. Each groove consists of a helical portion extending for somewhat less than a complete convolution the extremities being joined by a steeply inclined and deeper channel 4, the various channels being offset relatively to one another. The depth of the grooves is approximately equal to the radius of the balls, while that of the channels 4 is equal to the diameter thereof.
