<p>A nuclear reactor core (101) divided into a central region, a buckled region and a peripheral region has at least two fuel assemblies (116) of relatively high reactivity in fuel cells in the central region and fuel assemblies (116) of relatively low reactivity in fuel cells in the peripheral region. The control rods (120) are arranged in networks. Each network comprises approximately one-fourth of the control rods (120) in the core (101), the selected networks being substantially evenly spread throughout the core (101), selecting a desired interval for insertion of the selected networks of control rods (120) during the power operation cycle, actuating a substantial portion of a first selected network of control rods (120) to at least partially inserted positions and actuating a substantial portion of all remaining control rods (120) to substantially fully withdrawn positions for the desired interval, and repeating the actuation step, but alternating between selected networks of control rods, for each remaining time interval of the power operation cycle.</p> |
