The decoder consists of a shaft mounted wheel (1) connected to a power supply by metal springs (4) for generating varying voltages to a circuit connected in series with it which can control the direction and speed of rotation according to the voltage level. On opposite sides the wheel has two electrically connected metal cores (12) and two circular gratings (11) displaced angularly from one another around the metal cores and on opposite sides. Each of the gratings has a number of electrically conductive zones (111) with different conductivities and insulated zones (112) arranged radially and alternately around the metal cores to which they are connected. The metal springs have two leaves (41) and (42) of equal size in contact with the gratings which supply different voltage signals as the wheel rotates, these voltages being conducted away by a further spring leaf in contact with one metal core.
