摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element in which the thickness of a liquid crystal layer is thinner than the particle size of a spacer material which regulates the liquid crystal layer thickness, and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: In this liquid crystal display element, a substrate 10 having a pixel electrode 13, counter electrode 14, source electrode 14, gate insulating film 16, protective film 17 and orientation controlling film 18, and a substrate 20 having a light-shielding film 21, color filter 22 and orientation controlling film 23 are disposed with the orientation controlling films 18, 22 facing each other. A spacer material 19 is disposed between a part where the gate insulating film 16 on the counter electrode 14 is partially removed and a light shielding film 21 which is formed lower than the color filter 22. Thus, the obtd. liquid crystal display element has a liquid crystal layer 24 of uniform thickness which is thinner than the particle size of the spacer material 19 and is controlled with high accuracy.</p>
