PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve floating of a magnetic head by providing a magnetic disk substrate having a NiCuP film on the surface thereof, in which the NiCuP based film is crystallized and in which the crystallized film surface is polished. SOLUTION: A NiCuP film formed on the surface of a magnetic disk substrate is crystallized in advance and the surface of the NiCuP film is polished to a surface roughness Ra of not more than 100Å, before film formation of a medium. This crystallization and polishing are carried out by performing heat treatment at 350 deg.C or higher after the NiCuP plating film is formed on the substrate, and then polishing the surface thereof. Thus, by heat-treating the substrate to crystallize the NiCuP film on the surface thereof and then polishing the crystallized NiCuP film at the stage of the magnetic disk substrate before film formation of a recording medium, no further crystallization occurs in the NiCuP film and the smoothness of the surface is not deteriorated, even when the substrate is subsequently treated at a high temperature.
