SMALL SCREEN GENERATOR AND PROGRAM INFORMATION TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily extract a multi-screen moving image with high quality from sent/received MPEG stream data and to serve the image to viewers as program information. SOLUTION: An MPEG stream is given at first to a variable length coding and decoding section 41. The variable length coding and decoding section 41 converts an MPEG variable length code into a fixed length code. The MPEG stream converted into the fixed length code is given to a representative value extract section 42, from which representative data of a macro block are extracted. One screen is made up of a plurality of macro blocks 50, from which luminance signal representative values 51-54 and chrominance signal representative values 55, 56 are extracted. The representative values obtained as above are fed to a multiplier means 43 for image data conversion, from which small screen information is obtained. Since the representative values obtained by the representative value extract section 42 are not subject to compression processing or the like the representative values are converted into actual image data through multiplication only and then the small screen data are easily obtained.
