System for identification, handling and recording of medical samples

A system for the identification, handling and recording of eg. blood samples during their laboratory examination employs a transponder IC (5) in a housing (4) adhesively attached to the container (3) holding the patient (2) sample. Relevant medical/processing data is transferred to the transponder (5) memory via a portable IR operated transmitter (7) and/or an in-house network terminal (8) after which the container (3) is physically transported to the investigating laboratory (10). A scanning unit (11) interprets the data in transponder (5) storage to direct the container (3) via a conveyor system (13, 14) to the diagnostic centres (A,B,C,D) where results are registered for storage via the terminal (8) and successive samples pass to a freezer archive (20).
