SAFETY RELIEF VALVE USEFUL IN AN OIL FILTER

An assembly includes at least one inlet port (36), at least one normal outlet port (31), at least one bypass port (30) and a safety relief valve system for regulating fluid flow from the inlet port to the bypass port. The valve system includes a compressible component (126) disposed adjacent to the bypass port. The valve system has a closed position wherein the compressible component prevents fluid flow through the bypass port. The valve system further includes an open position wherein the compressible component allows fluid flow through the bypass port when the inlet port is pressurized and the pressure differential between the inlet port and the normal outlet port is greater than or equal to a predetermined value. The assembly can be a fluid filter assembly. The present invention is also directed to a method for regulating fluid flow in an assembly by providing the previously described safety relief valve system and introducing fluid into the assembly.
