The invention concerns a building block (7) made of refractory material for a heater and an outer casing constructed from such building blocks. The length (20) and height (19) of the building block (7) are an integral multiple of a thickness (18). Disposed in at least three peripheral end faces (13) are grooves (14) which extend in the longitudinal direction of the end faces and have centre axes extending along a line (21) bisecting the thickness (18), the centre axes being parallel to an outer and/or inner face (15, 24) of the building block (7). Disposed in the inner face (24), in the region of points of intersection (32) between limit faces (29) of casing cubes (30) whose side edges are of a length corresponding to the thickness (18) of the building block (7) and whose front face is bisected by a centre axis (33), are recesses (34) which extend in the direction of these centre axes (33) on both sides of these limit faces (29) and at least from the limit faces formed by the end faces (13) over part of a distance between adjacent limit faces (29).
