In a first step a removal device (4) for a preformed grinding disc and a preformed grinding disc itself are moved relative to each other in the supply direction up to a predetermined position. In a second step after the two have been moved either the removal device or the disc or both are each moved left and right to produce contact between corresponding outer circumferential faces of the removal device. A third step detects a target position (X) based on the results of the second step either for the disc or the removal device to bring one or other into alignment with the target position. In a fourth step either the disc or removal device are moved in the supply direction to remove the disc.
