The invention involves an immunological method of separating specificallytargeted cells or molecular structures from a mixed population under conditions which minimize damage to the cellular structure or the molecular integrity. The method is based upon the specific interaction of a label and an antibody directed against the label and the ability of a competitor to inhibit the interaction between the label and the antibody.
