The compact lock (4) is fitted into an upright member (3) of the bodywork (1) of the vehicle opposite the closure block (6) which is on the edge of the door (2) near the external handle (7). The lock is operated from outside by an element (8) such as a pushbutton switch on the same upright, and the handle performs no actuating function. Operation from inside may involve a lever with a security attachment installed e.g. on the central console between the front seats. For additional security the external casing of the lock may allow entry of one or two Bowden cables operating internal catches.
