This invention relates to a lock for doors, and in particular a portable lock that can be applied to a door of the type which is opened by a turning handle connected to a latch. The lock comprises a housing (3, A, 15 or 30) for attachment over the handle of the door (1) and where the housing (3, A, 15 or 30) covers at least part of the handle, and means for securing the housing between the door and the handle. The lock has in one embodiment a telescopic arm (4) where one end is connected to the housing and the other end to the bottom of the door, and in a second embodiment an adjustable length of cord (104) connected at one end to the top of the door and connected to the housing at the other end. The housing can be of various shapes chosen for suitability to fit to the handle shape; the housing can prevent the turning of the handle thus rendering the door unusable, or only prevent access to the handle on one side of the door to allow only one way use of the door.
