Riveting with a coated rivet that also deforms to clamp-up workpieces

A method of connecting two workpiece sheets together comprises one of the sheets having a rivet hole bore provided with a frusto-conical counterbore to receive a rivet with a conical shaped head and the other workpiece sheet has a plain bore rivet hole so that the two sheets can be connected together. To obtain a compressive clamped-up retaining pressure between the worksheets the head of the rivet is provided with a ringed shaped domed top surface which when the rivet head is flattened during rivet fastening and deformation,the shank of the rivet and the underside of the conical interface expand radially outwards to fill in rough finishes,out of roundness and eliminate air gap possibilities. The ringed shape dome on the rivet head has a metallic volume B, and the space between the sheet hole, counterbore and rivet body has a volume A, and volume B exceeds volume A so that on deformation volume B expands into volume A pushing outwards against the workpiece. Coatings and sealants applied to the rivets provide barrier material to the dome head and rivet shank to fill interstices between the worksheets and rivet, effectively minimizing or eliminating exfoliation, electrolytic and stress corrosion.
