A line interface circuit for interfacing a handset 180 and a modem 107 and main control unit 101 of a communications system having a key matrix 250, with an exchange system EXH, is described. The circuit includes a single dialer 360 and a single line interface unit 370 and is therefore not fully divided into separate voice and non-voice communications paths. A line interface control unit 320 receives dial information from the key matrix 250 via the main control unit 101 when the modem 107 and main control unit 101 are in the power-on state and transmits it to the dialer 360. When they are in the power-off state, the dial information is directly received from the key matrix 250.
