The control device (14) responds to signals from sensors of throttle flap position (20), road speed (16) and depression (18) of the brake pedal (30) generating pressure in the braking circuit (12) for the driven wheels (26,28). The output torque of the engine (22) is applied to the wheels via the automatic transmission (10) and differential gearing (24). The hydraulic pressure provides a precise indication of the severity of braking, and makes for more comfortable gear engagement for starting or reversing, and on a slope where the vehicle may run backwards.
