Compounds of formula (I) wherein R1 includes alkyl, halo, nitro, amino, cyano, alkoxy, and alkoxycarbonyl; R2 is alkyl and substituted alkyl; and R3 is OH or NHOH, are useful for inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase enzymes in animals, and as such, prevent and treat diseases resulting from the breakdown of connective tissues.
